Spinners Offense Shorted Out

Oneonta quiets Spinners bats, 4-1

LOWELL, MA – Three Oneonta pitchers combined for a one-run six-hitter, quieting the NY-Penn League’s second-best offense as the Tigers defeated the Lowell Spinners, 4-1, on Monday night. Lowell lost their third game in a row and with the loss, the Spinners fell two games behind Staten Island in the chase for the NY-Penn League wild card.

Oneonta (27-20) scored one run in the top of the third to open the scoring but Lowell (25-21) answered just one inning later in the fourth to tie the game. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Mike Jones, the TD Banknorth Player of the Game.

The Tigers took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with three runs, the big hit a two-run triple by right fielder Casper Wells. The Spinners rallied to load the bases with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but an Aaron Reza strikeout ended the threat and the Spins would only muster one more baserunner.

Jose Capellan (4-2) was tagged with the loss, giving up all four runs in six innings and striking out six to increase his team lead to 53. Adam Mills continued to impress with his third consecutive scoreless outing, allowing just one hit in three innings and striking out two to decrease his ERA to 1.88.

Jones and Fernandez-Oliva each had two hits, with Jones upping his average to .342, amongst the NY-Penn League leaders. Pedro Vasquez and Ty Weeden pitched in with one hit apiece.

The Spinners head to State College for a three-game road trip starting tomorrow, hoping to keep pace in the division and wild card races. Miguel Socolovich (1-2, 3.44) gets the start and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
