Spinners Rebound

4-3 victory halts four-game losing streak

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – The Lowell Spinners stole a season-high five bases and Carlos Fernandez-Oliva knocked in two runs to defeat the State College Spikes on Wednesday night, 4-3, snapping a season-long four-game losing streak. With the victory, the Spinners remain three games back in the Stedler Division and two behind in the wild card race.

Rafael Cabreja gave Lowell (26-22) the early lead with an RBI single in the top of the third inning, knocking in Aaron Reza, who had reached base on an error before stealing second and advancing to third on a groundout.

Reza tripled to lead off the top of the fifth inning and scored on a single by Fernandez-Oliva. After a walk and a groundout, Fernandez-Oliva scored from third on a RBI groundout by Kade Keowen, giving Lowell a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Fernandez-Oliva knocked in Luis Segovia with his second RBI single of the game, giving Lowell a four-run lead.

State College (23-25) got on the board with two runs in the sixth and a third in the seventh off of Spinners reliever Joseph Guerra, who picked up the win despite allowing all three of the Spikes runs. Scott Lonergan finished the seventh, inducing a groundout with the tying run at third base.

Lowell starter Nick Hagadone breezed through two innings, retiring all six batters he faced with three strikeouts. Hagadone has not been scored upon in eight straight innings, a span in which he has racked up 11 strikouts.

Joseph Guerra (1-3) picked up the win in long relief, allowing three runs on seven hits in four and two-thirds innings of work. Lonergan retired the only batter he faced, and Adam Blackley struck out two in an inning of set-up work.

Felix Ventura, Lowell’s closer, shut down State College in the ninth for his league-leading eleventh save just hours after being named to the New York-Penn League All-Star team.

Pedro Vasquez was 3-for-4 with two stolen bases to lead the Spinners offense tonight, and Fernandez-Oliva picked up two RBI in the leadoff spot. Reza, Cabreja and Ty Weeden added the other hits for Lowell. Mike Jones walked to extend his consecutive on-base streak away from LeLacheur Park to 19 games.

Along with Ventura, Lowell’s Yamaico Navarro, Ty Weeden, Mike Jones and the injured Ryan Kalish were all named today to the New York-Penn League American League All-Star team. The third annual New York-Penn League All-Star game is scheduled for Tuesday night at Hudson Valley.

Lowell looks to take the rubber game of the three-game series against the State College Spikes tomorrow night with Jordan Craft (5-2, 4.24) on the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
