Spinners Can't Find a Rhythm
Lowell drops
rubber game at State College, 4-1
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA – Four
State College pitchers held the Lowell Spinners to just five hits as the Spikes
defeated the Spinners on a rainy Thursday night, 4-1. With the loss,
Lowell missed another opportunity to gain ground on Stedler
Division leader Vermont, who fell to Aberdeen.
State College (24-25) wasted no time taking a lead they would not
relinquish with a run in the bottom of the first inning. First baseman Justin
Byler walked with two outs, and scored one batter later on a double by catcher
Andrew Walker.
The Spikes increased the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of
the third on a sacrifice fly before adding two more insurance runs in the
bottom of the fifth inning on a fielder’s choice and an RBI single.
Jorge Jimenez crushed the first pitch of the seventh inning
over the left field fence for his fourth homerun of the season to put
Lowell (26-23) on the board.
Spinners starter Jordan Craft (5-3) lost his third consecutive
decision, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings. He walked three and
struck out one. Ryne Lawson was outstanding in long relief, allowing one hit in
three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Lawson faced the minimum in his most
effective outing of the summer.
Lowell scattered five hits throughout the lineup, with
Jimenez pacing the offense with his 25th RBI, the second-highest
tally on the team. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva, Mike Jones, Brett Lewis and Aaron
Reza each had a single. Jones’ his single in the fifth inning extended his
consecutive on-base steak on the road to 20 games, tying for the longest such
streak this season.
Lowell heads home for a three-game set with the Hudson
Valley Renegades beginning tomorrow night on Flashlight Giveaway, sponsored by
O’Connor True Value. Felix Doubront (0-1, 18.00) looks to rebound from a
disastrous eight-run outing last Sunday against Oneonta. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. As always, standing room tickets or seats are still available
for every Lowell Spinners game at LeLacheur Park.
