Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short
Spinners
score three but leave 'em loaded in the ninth down 6-5
LOWELL, MA – The Lowell
Spinners scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and had the bases
loaded with two outs before the Hudson Valley Renegades ended a furious rally
to defeat Lowell, 6-5, on Friday night’s Flashlight Giveaway Night, sponsored
by O’Conner True Value.
With Vermont’s loss to Batavia, the Spinners remain three games behind the
Lake Monsters in the Stedler Division.
Hudson Valley (22-28) quickly put two runs on the board in the top
of the first when Renegades first baseman Stephen Vogt singled up the middle to
score two.
Lowell (26-24) cut the lead to one in the bottom of the
third inning when Jorge Jimenez grounded into a fielder’s choice with the bases
loaded. Hudson Valley pulled away in the top of the fourth on Vogt’s two-run
homerun.
The Spinners cut the deficit in half with a run in the
bottom of the fourth on TD Banknorth Player of the Game Will Vazquez’s RBI
double. The score stood at 4-2 until the eighth inning, when
Hudson Valley third baseman Henry Wrigley singled in two runs to
expand the Renegades lead.
Lowell’s stirring bottom of the ninth comeback put three runs
on the board. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva singled in a run and Jimenez hit a
bases-loaded two-run single to get the crowd onto its feet. After a Kade Keowen
strikeout, Pedro Vasquez walked to load the bases for the second time in the
inning to put the tying run on third and the winning run on second.
Lowell wasn’t able to capitalize when Ty Weeden hit a fly
ball to centerfield to end the ballgame.
Felix Doubront (0-2) took the loss tonight, giving up
four runs on seven hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked one in
his third start for the Spinners. Tony Bajoczky, who arrived from the Gulf
Coast League just hours before game-time, pitched four innings of long relief,
allowing two runs on three hits.
Lowell laced 10 hits, led by Fernandez-Oliva’s 3-for-5 night
in the leadoff spot, where he belted his team-leading 13th double and knocked
in one run. Vazquez had two hits, while Jimenez, Weeden, Marks,
Deshaun Brooks and Rafael Cabreja each recorded one hit apiece. Four
of Lowell’s ten hits were doubles.
The Spinners head to Fenway Park tomorrow afternoon for the Second Annual “Futures at
Fenway” doubleheader. Lowell faces off with the Hudson Valley Renegades in the
first game, beginning at 12 p.m.
Spinners ace Jose Capellan (4-2. 3.40 ERA), who leads the team in strikeouts
(53) and innings pitched (53.0), is scheduled to start against Hudson Valley’s
Alex Cobb (3-3, 3.18 ERA).
The Portland Sea Dogs will take on the Harrisburg
Senators approximately one hour after the Spinners game concludes.
