Spinners Surge into All-Star Break

Lowell wins pitchers' duel, 2-1

LOWELL, MA – The Lowell Spinners scored twice in the second inning and held on to defeat the Hudson Valley Renegades on Sunday night, 2-1, in front of 5,030 fans at LeLacheur Park on Kids’ T-Shirt Giveaway Night, sponsored by MA/Com Credit Union, Pepsi, and API of New Hampshire.

Lowell (28-24) scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the second inning when Deshaun Brooks, Rafael Cabreja and Will Vazquez all singled to load the bases with one out. Aaron Reza followed with a groundout that scored Brooks and, after a Carlos Fernandez-Oliva walk, Pedro Vasquez singled to knock in the second Spinners run of the game.

Hudson Valley (22-30) was held scoreless until the eighth, when shortstop Shawn O’Malley tripled to lead off the inning and Maiko Loyola followed with a groundout to first to score the base runner. The Renegades came no closer as New York-Penn League All-Star closer Felix Ventura picked up his twelfth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Miguel Socolovich (2-3) had one of his strongest starts of the season, throwing five scoreless innings of two-hit ball while walking three and striking out one batter. Eammon Portice struck out three and faced the minimum over two scoreless innings of relief and Adam Blackley struck out two and allowed one run in an inning of set-up work for “El Principe” Felix Ventura’s scoreless ninth.

The Spinners spread six hits between six different hitters with Vasquez, Brooks, Cabreja, Vazquez, Reza and Jorge Jimenez each collecting one hit. Jimenez’ fifth-inning double tied him for the team lead with Fernandez-Oliva at 13.

The Spinners have the next three days off as the league breaks for the New York-Penn League All-Star game on Tuesday night in Hudson Valley.

When the team returns, 2007 Red Sox 1st round draft pick Nick Hagadone (0-1, 4.82) makes his LeLacheur Park debut against division rival Vermont at 7:05 p.m. on Pet Dish Giveaway, sponsored by Courier, MassBank, Belvidere Veterinary, and LoJack. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and standing room tickets are available at the Lowell Spinners Ticket Office.
