Spinners Break Even

Lowell, Tri-City split double-header

TROY, NYDeshaun Brooks and David Marks hit their first professional homeruns to power an 8-2 Lowell victory in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Monday, but the Tri-City pitching shut down the Spinners offense, 3-1, in Game 2 to split the doubleheader. Both contests were seven-innings long.

With the split, the Spinners remained 2.5 games behind Oneonta in the Stedler Division and climbed to within 2.5 games of the wild-card leading Staten Island Yankees.

In Game 1,
Lowell (32-26) wasted no time getting out to an early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Brooks. The Spinners tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth on Brooks’ first professional homerun, a three-run bomb that sailed over the right field wall.

Lowell poured it on in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring two runs in each inning on a Jorge Jimenez double in the fifth and Marks’ first professional homerun, a line drive that cleared the left field wall, in the sixth.

Tri-City (19-37) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning off Spinner reliever Carlos Gonzalez, recently promoted from the Gulf Coast League.

In Game 2, the ValleyCats opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by catcher Kevin Carkeek. Tri-City added two more in the bottom of the sixth on a homerun by rightfielder Russell Dixon.

The Spinners scored their lone run in the top of the seventh on a Carlos Fernandez-Oliva RBI double, but Rafael Cabreja flied out to centerfield to end Game 2.

Game 1 starter Miguel Socolovich (3-3) retired the first 11 batters of the game en route to the victory. He allowed just one hit, while walking four and striking out three. Gonzalez allowed two runs, both unearned, and struck out three in two innings in his first appearance for the Spinners.

Game 2 starter Ryne Lawson (4-3) allowed just one run on three hits in four and two-thirds, but he walked four against two strikeouts. Scott Lonergan allowed two runs on three hits in an inning and a third of relief.

Oscar Tejeda led
Lowell’s offense with three hits and a stolen base, all coming in game 2 of the doubleheader. In his first four games as a member of the Spinners, the 17-year old Tejeda has a .333 batting average. Cabreja, Jimenez, Brooks and Yamaico Navarro each had two hits in two games with Fernandez-Oliva, Marks, Pedro Vasquez, Will Vazquez and Ty Weeden collected one hit each. Brooks collected four RBI in Game 1.

Lowell looks to win the series in Tuesday night’s rubber game as No. 1 Draft Pick Nick Hagadone (0-1, 3.65) gets the start for the Spinners. Hagadone has retired the last 15 batters he’s faced and has not been scored upon in his last five starts. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
