Spinners Win In a Laugher

Lowell pounds 18 hits in 13-0 blowout

TROY, NY – The Lowell Spinners sent twelve men to the plate and scored nine runs in the sixth inning as the Spinners blew out the Tri-City ValleyCats on Tuesday night, 13-0. Three Spinners hitters enjoyed three-hit games and Lowell won their seventh game in their last nine contests.

With the victory and an Oneonta loss, the Spinners moved to one and a half games behind the Stedler Division-leading Tigers.

Lowell (33-26) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with four runs. Kade Keowen opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly that scored Yamaico Navarro and a double by Carlos Fernandez-Oliva scored Ty Weeden with the game’s second run. Oscar Tejeda extended the lead with a two-run single.

Lowell’s first six batters of the sixth inning reached base with Navarro, Weeden, and Jorge Jimenez all knocking in a run with RBI singles and Keowen rapping a two-run single. Pedro Vasquez followed by crushing his team-leading fifth homerun of the season over the left field wall for three more runs.

Tri-City (19-38) was held scoreless by four Lowell pitchers, who only allowed three hits all night.

Lowell starter Nick Hagadone ran his scoreless streak to 14 innings, striking out three while allowing just one hit in three innings.

Adam Blackley (2-1) picked up the victory with a dominating performance out of the bullpen. Blackley struck out the first seven batters he faced and finished his night with four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts.

Eric Beattie and Felix Ventura also contributed with an inning of scoreless relief each.

Weeden was the star of the Spinner offense tonight, reaching base in four of his five trips, picking up three hits and a walk. Tejeda and Navarro each had three hits, with Tejeda running his average to .400 in five games with Lowell.

Fernandez-Oliva, Vasquez and Rafael Cabreja each collected two hits while Jimenez, Keowen, and Deshaun Brooks had one apiece. Since play resumed after the All-Star Break, Fernandez-Oliva is batting.310 with three multi-hit games.

Lowell comes home for a six-game homestand tomorrow night, beginning with Baseball Giveaway, sponsored by Butler Bank. The Spinners welcome the Aberdeen IronBirds for their only visit to LeLacheur Park as Jordan Craft (5-3, 4.36) gets the start for the home team. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and standing room tickets are available.

NOTES: Lowell’s 18 hits fell one short of their season-high, set against Oneonta on July 5, and the Spinners 13 runs tied their season high…Lowell’s nine-run sixth inning was the most the Spinners have scored in an inning this season…Blackley tied the Spinners record for consecutive strikeouts with seven, matching Phil Dumatrait (August 30, 2001 vs. New Jersey) and Hunter Jones (August 31, 2005 vs. Vermont)...It was the first of Lowell’s four shutouts to occur on the road.
