Spinners Continue to Roll

Lowell bats smash 13 hits in 11-2 win

LOWELL, MA – No offense in the NY-Penn League is as hot as the Lowell Spinners, as the team put up double digits in runs and hits for the second night in a row, pasting the Aberdeen IronBirds 11-2 on Baseball Giveaway, sponsored by Butler Bank. The win was the Spinners eighth in their last ten games.

With the victory, Lowell moved within a game of Stedler Division leading Oneonta.

Lowell (34-26) picked up where they left off on Wednesday, scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Oscar Tejeda doubled, advanced to third on an error and scored on a Yamaico Navarro single.

The Spinners added to their lead in the fourth on a Rafael Cabreja RBI single, and then put the game away in the fifth inning with four runs. Carlos Fernandez-Oliva picked up an RBI on a single, Jorge Jimenez doubled in a run, and Navarro collected his second RBI single of the night. The final run of the inning scored on a groundout.

Lowell piled on with a run in the seventh on a Ty Weeden RBI single, and four more in the eighth inning. Navarro and Tejeda both had RBI doubles while Fernandez-Oliva stroked an single for his second RBI of the night. The final run of the inning scored on a wild pitch.

Aberdeen (27-33) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Spinner starter and TD Banknorth Player of the Game Jordan Craft (6-3) went six innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven Ironbirds. Tony Bajoczky earned the save with three innings of one-hit ball.

Tejeda and Navarro each had three-hit nights to lead Lowell’s offense, with Tejeda continuing to impress in his short stint with the Spinners. In six games, the 17-year-old is hitting .440.

Navarro had three RBI and Fernandez-Oliva chipped in two RBI of his own. Every Lowell starter reached base at least once and the team played well defensively, led by Kade Keowen’s outfield assist and great diving catch in the fifth inning.

Lowell continues their homestand tomorrow night on Johnny Pesky Bobblehead Night, sponsored by Tyco Electronics and Collins Dentistry. Felix Doubront (0-2, 9.00) gets the start as gates open at 5:30 p.m. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and standing room tickets are available.
