17-year-old Oscar Tejeda hits 9th inning walk-off single

LOWELL, MA – Oscar Tejeda hit a sinking line drive into right field that scored David Marks with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Lowell Spinners slugged out an 11-10 victory over the Aberdeen IronBirds on Uncut Card Sheet Giveaway, sponsored by Pepsi, Sal’s Pizza, Stevens Business Service, Kelly’s Services and Jay Gee’s Ice Cream and Fun Center.

With the win, the Spinners remained within striking distance of Stedler Division leader Oneonta.

Aberdeen (28-34) jumped out to an early lead, scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth innings before the Spinners exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Carlos Fernandez-Oliva knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded RBI single and the next batter, Tejeda, followed with a two-run triple into the left field gap. The next two batters, Jorge Jimenez and Yamaico Navarro each knocked in a run with a double and a single, respectively.

Lowell (35-27) continued to pound the IronBirds pitching staff with three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a 2-run single by Fernandez-Oliva and an RBI single by Jimenez.

Aberdeen climbed within one run in the top of the seventh with four runs, but Ty Weeden crushed a ball that barely cleared the left-field foul pole in the bottom of the inning for his fourth homerun of the season, extending Lowell’s lead to two.

The IronBirds did not quit, tying the game in the top of the eighth with two runs, setting up Tejeda’s heroics in the bottom of the ninth.

In the ninth inning, Marks was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a bunt single by Pedro Vasquez. Both runners advanced one base on a groundout before Tejeda’s single gave the Spinners their second walk-off win at LeLacheur Park in the past week and their fifth walk-off win of the year.

Spinners starter Jose Capellan allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings. Capellan struck out seven batters, increasing his team-leading total to 67. Adam Mills gave up six runs in two innings of middle relief, but only two were earned. Willy Mota (4-3) picked up the victory with a scoreless ninth inning.

Jimenez led a 17-hit attack by the Spinners with four hits and two RBI. Tejeda was 3-for-6 with three RBI and Fernandez-Oliva, Navarro, Weeden and Vasquez each enjoyed two hits. With runners in scoring position this year, Fernandez-Oliva has a remarkable .422 batting average with runners in scoring position. Marks and Rafael Cabreja contributed with one hit each, and Cabreja extended his hitting streak to seven games. It was Lowell’s fourth consecutive game with double-digit hits.

Lowell welcomes the Staten Island Yankees for their only appearance at LeLacheur Park tomorrow night on Jonathan Papelbon Backpack and Boston Celtics Night, sponsored by Shields Meat. Miguel Socolovich (3-3, 3.68) toes the rubber for Lowell at 5:05 p.m. Gates open at 3:30 p.m. and standing room tickets are available.
