The Kids Are Alright
17-year-old Oscar Tejeda hits 9th inning walk-off single
LOWELL, MA – Oscar Tejeda
hit a sinking line drive into right field that scored David Marks with the
winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Lowell Spinners slugged out an
11-10 victory over the Aberdeen IronBirds on Uncut Card Sheet Giveaway,
sponsored by Pepsi, Sal’s Pizza, Stevens Business Service, Kelly’s Services and
Jay Gee’s Ice Cream and Fun Center.
With the win, the Spinners
remained within striking distance of Stedler Division leader Oneonta.
Carlos Fernandez-Oliva knocked in two runs with a
bases-loaded RBI single and the next batter, Tejeda, followed with a two-run
triple into the left field gap. The next two batters, Jorge Jimenez and Yamaico
Navarro each knocked in a run with a double and a single, respectively.
The IronBirds did not quit, tying the game in the top
of the eighth with two runs, setting up Tejeda’s heroics in the bottom of the
ninth.
In the ninth inning, Marks was hit by a pitch with one
out and advanced to second on a bunt single by Pedro Vasquez. Both runners
advanced one base on a groundout before Tejeda’s single gave the Spinners their
second walk-off win at
Spinners starter Jose Capellan allowed four runs on
seven hits in six innings. Capellan struck out seven batters, increasing his
team-leading total to 67. Adam Mills gave up six runs in two innings of middle
relief, but only two were earned. Willy Mota (4-3) picked up the victory with a
scoreless ninth inning.
Jimenez led a 17-hit attack by the Spinners with four
hits and two RBI. Tejeda was 3-for-6 with three RBI and Fernandez-Oliva,
Navarro, Weeden and Vasquez each enjoyed two hits. With runners in scoring
position this year, Fernandez-Oliva has a remarkable .422 batting average with
runners in scoring position. Marks and Rafael Cabreja contributed with one hit
each, and Cabreja extended his hitting streak to seven games. It was
