Spinners Beat Yanks, Inch Closer to Playoffs

Ty Weeden paces 6-3 victory with homerun, triple

LOWELL, MA – Ty Weeden hit his fifth homerun of the season and three Spinner pitchers shut down the current New York-Penn League wild card leading Staten Island Yankees 6-3 on Jonathan Papelbon Backpack Night and Celtics Night, sponsored by Shields Meat.

With the win, the Spinners moved to one game back of wild-card leader Staten Island. Division-leading Oneonta also lost, leaving Lowell one game back for the Stedler Division lead.

Lowell (36-27) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning as TD Banknorth Player of the Game Weeden hit a 3-2 pitch deep over the centerfield wall. The Spinners tacked on two more runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Fernandez-Oliva and an RBI double by Jorge Jimenez.

Weeden helped the Spinners put the game away in the fourth inning with a two-run triple deep to centerfield. David Marks immediately followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to score Weeden and give Lowell a six-run lead.

Staten Island (36-25) chipped away at Lowell’s lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but the Spinners bullpen shut the door with scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

Spinners starter Miguel Socolovich (4-3) had his third strong start in a row, allowing just two earned runs in six innings. He struck out five and walked none. Socolovich has a 1.13 ERA in his last three starts. Scott Lonergan allowed one run on two hits in two innings of set-up work, while Felix Ventura picked up his 14th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out the side. Ventura is just one save away from tying the Spinners career save record of 16.

Weeden led the offense with a 2-for-3 night, in which he belted fifth homerun of the season. Marks and Rafael Cabreja each had two hits, extending Cabreja’s hit streak to eight games. Jimenez, Deshaun Brooks and Oscar Tejeda each had a hit as the Spinners collected nine hits altogether.

Lowell looks to take the second game of this important three-game series against Staten Island tomorrow night on Disney Night, sponsored by Disney. During the game, one lucky family will win a trip for four to Walt Disney World.

Nick Hagadone (0-1, 2.93) toes the rubber at 5:05 p.m. and gates open at 3:30 p.m. Standing room tickets are available.
