How About That?!

Spinners rip off five runs in ninth inning for 5-3 comeback win

ONEONTA, NY – Ryan Dent hit a single to right that scored Che-Hsuan Lin for the go-ahead run in the ninth inning as the Lowell Spinners completed their greatest comeback of the 2007 season with a 5-3 victory over the Oneonta Tigers Tuesday night.

With the win, the Spinners moved to within one game of the Tigers for the Stedler Division lead with 10 games to play.

Lowell (37-29) was held to just three hits through the first eight innings until their bats erupted in the top of the ninth inning against the New York Penn-League’s top closer, Oneonta’s Noah Krol.

Deshaun Brooks led off the inning with a walk and one batter later, Yamaico Navarro hit a double that scored pinch runner Luis Segovia with the Spinners’ first run. Pedro Vasquez followed with a double that scored Navarro.

After a pitching change, Lin hit a single that advanced Vasquez to third and on the next pitch, Lin stole second. Pinch-hitter Rafael Cabreja followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Vasquez to tie the game. The very next batter, Dent, hit a single through the right side of the infield that scored Lin with the go-ahead run. Oscar Tejeda added an insurance run with an RBI single.

Mota retired Oneonta in order to secure the come-from-behind victory.

Oneonta (38-28) took an early lead in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by second baseman Justin Henry and shortstop Jorge Patino and added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI triple by leftfielder Casper Wells.

Lowell starter Felix Doubront pitched well against Oneonta’s lineup, which leads the league in runs scored, allowing three runs in five innings with four strikeouts. Eammon Portice was spectacular in middle relief, pitching two scoreless innings with four strikeouts before giving way to Mota (5-3), who picked up the victory with scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

Dent, a 2007 first round pick by the Boston Red Sox in June, went 2-for-4 with the game-winning RBI in his Spinners debut. Lin, also making his New York-Penn League debut after beginning the season in the Gulf Coast League, went 1-for-4, starting in centerfield and scoring the winning run.

Tejeda, Navarro, Vasquez, Carlos Fernandez-Oliva and Jorge Jimenez each picked up one hit for Lowell, with Fernandez-Oliva reaching base three times via base on balls. Jimenez left the game in the sixth after being hit in the head with a pitch in the top of the sixth inning.

Lowell looks to sweep the short series with Oneonta tomorrow night, which would tie the Tigers for the Stedler Division lead. Spinners ace southpaw Jose Capellan (4-2, 3.34) gets the start in a game with serious postseason implications. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
