Spinners Playoff Hopes Take a Hit

Lowell baffled by Tri-City pitching staff, loses 10-0

LOWELL, MA – Three Tri-City pitchers held Lowell’s offense scoreless on just five hits as the ValleyCats defeated the Spinners 10-0 on Boston Red Sox Jersey Off the Back Night, sponsored by Stevens Business Service, Pepsi and Hood.

With a win by Oneonta, the Spinners fell to two games behind the Stedler Division leading Tigers with seven to play.

Tri-City (24-43) scored first in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded walk and put the game far out of reach in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs on just two hits.

The ValleyCats tacked on three more runs in the eighth, with the big hit a two-run double by designated hitter Collin DeLome. Tri-City finished the scoring in the top of the ninth on another bases-loaded walk.

Lowell (38-31) threatened just once, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth inning.

Spinners starter and TD Banknorth Player of the Game Nick Hagadone gave the Spinners three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. With three scoreless innings, Hagadone reached 20 consecutive scoreless innings, breaking the Spinners team record for consecutive scoreless innings set by Matt Kinney in 1996.

Adam Blackley (2-2) took the loss with one of the more interesting pitching lines in the 2007 season. Blackley pitched an inning and a third, allowed six runs on just one hit, with one of them earned. He walked six and struck out one.

Carlos Gonzalez allowed three runs on three hits in three and two-thirds innings of long relief, striking out four while Eric Beattie allowed one run in an inning of relief.

Carlos Fernandez led the Spinners bats with a 2-for-3 night while Jorge Jimenez, Ryan Dent and Kade Keowen each had one hit.

Lowell plays the final seven games of the season on the road, beginning tomorrow night in Vermont. Jordan Craft (6-3, 3.74) looks to pick up his seventh win of the season in a must-win game for the Spinners. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
