Spinners Craft a Victory

Three Spinners pitchers twirl a 4-0 four-hitter

BURLINGTON, VT – Jordan Craft tossed five scoreless innings to pick up his seventh victory of the season, while Jorge Jimenez knocked in two RBI as the Lowell Spinners defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters on Saturday night, 4-0.

With the win, the Spinners remained two games behind Stedler Division leader Oneonta with six games to play.

Lowell (39-31) opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the third as David Marks and Che-Hsuan Lin both walked and scored on a two-out double by Jimenez.

The Spinners added a run in the fourth on a Will Vazquez RBI single and tacked on one more insurance run in the sixth on a throwing error by Vermont (34-35) shortstop Dan Lyons.

Lowell starter Craft (7-3) picked up the victory with five solid innings of three-hit ball, walking one and striking out two. With the win, Craft tied the Spinners’ franchise record for wins in a season, last matched by Ryan Phillips in 2005. Craft has not allowed a run in his last 11 innings and has a shot to break the franchise record for wins when he makes his next start on Thursday evening in Brooklyn.

Willy Mota, despite walking three batters, completed two scoreless innings of relief while Felix Ventura breezed through two innings to close the game, striking out the side in the eighth inning.

Jimenez was all the offense the Spinners needed tonight, as he had two of the team’s four hits, both doubles. With his two doubles, Jimenez broke the Spinners’ franchise record for doubles in a season, set by Moises Rojas in 1998.

Vazquez and Carlos Fernandez-Oliva had the other hits for Lowell.

Lowell looks to keep pace with division leader Oneonta tomorrow night as Felix Doubront (0-2, 6.48) takes the hill in another vital game for Spinner playoff chances. Over his last three starts, Doubront has pitched very well, carrying an ERA of 2.40. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
