Pace
Lowell
remains in playoff hunt with 7-3 victory
BURLINGTON, VT – Carlos
Fernandez-Oliva hit a three-run homerun in the third inning to put the Spinners
ahead to stay while Felix Doubront picked up his first victory of the season as
the Lowell Spinners defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters on Sunday night, 7-3.
With the win, the Spinners
remained two games behind Stedler Division leader Oneonta with five games to
play.
Lowell (40-31) took an early lead with a run in the second
inning on an RBI double by Ryan Dent.
Vermont (34-36) responded in the bottom of the inning with
two runs to take a brief lead.
The Spinners returned the favor with three runs in the
top of the third inning, regaining the lead when Fernandez-Oliva smashed his
second homerun of the season over the right field wall, scoring Che-Hsuan Lin
and Jorge Jimenez.
Lowell added single runs in the seventh on a Jimenez RBI
single, in the eighth on Yamaico Navarro’s fifth homerun of the season, and in
the ninth on an RBI single by Lin.
The Lake Monsters scored their third run in the seventh inning on a
sacrifice fly.
Lowell starter Doubront (1-2) was solid, allowing two runs
on five hits in five innings. Doubront struck out three and walked one, finding
a groove towards the end of the season with a 2.70 ERA in his last four starts.
Eammon Portice blew away the Vermont lineup in three innings of middle relief, striking
out six while allowing one unearned run and closer Felix Ventura pitched a
scoreless ninth in his NY-Penn League leading 27th appearance of the
season.
Every Spinner starter but one reached base and the
team collected ten hits. Jimenez, Fernandez-Oliva and Dent each had two hits to
lead Lowell, with Jimenez belting his 22nd double of
the season to further the franchise record.
Lin, Navarro, Rafael Cabreja and Brett Lewis each had
one hit for the Spinners.
Lowell goes for its fourth straight win against
Vermont tomorrow night as Jose Capellan (4-3, 3.69) with ace
Jose Capellan on the mound. First pitch in another do-or-die game for the
