Spinners Reach the Brink

Spinners lose to Vermont, fall three games back with three to play

BURLINGTON, VT – Spinners outfielder Rafael Cabreja continued his hot-hitting, two of the Spinners season-low three hits as the Spinners lost to Vermont on Tuesday night, 4-2, splitting the four-game series.

Combined with a win by Oneonta, the Spinners fell three games back in the Stedler Division with only three games to play. Lowell must win each of its final three games in Brooklyn and Oneonta must lose its three games against Aberdeen to put the Spinners in the playoffs.

Vermont (36-36) got on the board with two runs in the first inning after leading off with a triple, walk, and RBI single, and a run-scoring wild pitch.

Lowell (40-33) fought back for a run in the second. Yamaico Navarro led off with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, and advanced to third on a groundout by Carlos Fernandez-Oliva before scoring on Cabreja’s first hit of the night, a single to rightfield.

The score remained close until the bottom of the third, when Vermont tacked on two more. Lake Monster Brandon Whiting led off with a walk and stole his league-high 34th base, and moved to third on a single by Daniel Lyons. Garrett Bass blasted a double to centerfield, recording his second and third RBI of the game.

The Spinners put together a seventh-inning rally when Ty Weeden began the frame with a double to rightfield. Ryan Dent walked, and the runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Will Vazquez. Che-Hsuan Lin grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Weeden from third, but Dent was stranded when Oscar Tejeda struck out swinging.

Despite recording only a trio of hits, Lowell worked Vermont’s pitching for seven walks, including two by Yamaico Navarro.

Spinners starter Miguel Socolovich took the loss, allowing four runs in five innings on four hits and a season-high six walks. The Venezuelan right-hander struck out four.

Reliever Ryne Lawson followed with three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and recording a strikeout.

The Spinners head to Brooklyn, who have guaranteed themselves a playoff berth, but are still fighting for the McNamara Division.

Lowell puts its dwindling playoff hopes on the shoulders of Red Sox No. 1 Draft Pick, left-hander Nick Hagadone (0-1, 2.11 ERA), who gets the 7:05 p.m. start after setting the Spinners record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched at 20 innings in his last start.
