Spinners Fall Short in Season Finale

Lowell battles back but strands tying run on third base

BROOKLYN, NY – The Lowell Spinners battled back from a four-run deficit to score three in the eighth inning and send the tying run to the third base with two outs in the ninth inning before pinch hitter Jorge Jimenez grounded out to the pitcher to end the game and the Spinners season with a 5-4 loss to the Brooklyn Cycones on Friday night.

The loss leaves the Spinners with a 40-36 record this season, good for the third-best winning percentage in team history. The team fell just two victories short of matching its franchise-high 42 wins set in 2005.

After falling behind 5-1, the Spinners rallied for three runs in a long top of the eighth inning. Oscar Tejeda and Yamaico Navarro singled to start the inning before Kade Keowen walked to load the bases with no outs. After a pitching change and a strikeout by Jered Stanley, Will Vazquez singled to left to score two and send Keowen to second base. After a Brett Lewis walk to load the bases once more, David Marks walked to knock in the inning’s third run.

In the ninth, down by just one, Tejeda singled to leftfield and was bunted to second base by Yamaico Navarro. Pinch-hitter Carlos Fernandez-Oliva’s groundout moved Tejeda to third with two outs before Jimenez’ game-ending ground out.

Lowell scored first with a run in the second inning. Jered Stanley reached on a fielder’s choice and Vazquez singled before Brett Lewis hit an RBI single to right.

Brooklyn (48-25) battled back for a run of its own in the bottom of the inning on a Spinners error and two singles.

The Cyclones furthered their lead with two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, scoring their first pair of runs on Jason Jacobs’ New York Penn League-leading 12th homerun of the season. The two sixth-inning runs scored on an error by Tejeda.

Spinners starter Felix Doubront (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks. Doubront struck out a season-high six before giving way to Eammon Portice, who allowed two unearned runs on one hit while striking out three.

Five Spinners batters—Tejeda, Keowen, Vazquez, Lewis, and Marks—belted two hits apiece. Navarro recorded a single hit tonight while Stanley’s hit was his first as a Spinner.
