SPINNERS TO PREMIERE ORIGINAL BUD BOWL ENDING
Never-before-seen ending to popular ad campaign started it all
Lowell, MA – The Lowell Spinners, Class A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced today that the original, never-before-seen ending to the first Bud Bowl commercial will be played at the conclusion of the Spinners game on Friday, August 17. The video will play on LeLacheur Park’s Pepsi ProStar VideoBoard.
The Bud Bowl was a series of six spots that ran once, during the telecast of Super Bowl XXIII, in 1989. Sponsored by Anheuser Busch, it pitted Bud versus Bud Light in a stop motion battle of beer bottles that was played out over the course of the actual game itself.
The voices of Bob Costas and Paul Maguire provided the play by play and it attracted nationwide attention, including being lampooned by David Letterman. Even USA Today's oddsmaker got into the action by running an odds line in that weeks paper. It became the single most successful promotion in the history of the alcoholic beverage category.
“It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for me,” said Grant Pace, the copywriter who helped produce and write the campaign. “Most creatives go their whole career never having a spot run on the Super Bowl. I had six in one game.”
“As an organization, we pride ourselves on a promotional staff that reaches millions of fans with innovative promotions,” said Tim Bawmann, Vice President and General Manager of the Lowell Spinners. “With the Bud Bowl, Grant Pace reached an incredible number of people. It’s an honor for the Spinners to be a part of this new chapter in the Bud Bowl.”
Pace is now the Executive Creative Director at Conover Tuttle Pace in Boston and will be honored with a ceremonial first pitch before the 7:05 p.m. game against the Vermont Lake Monsters on Friday, August 17.
