Spinners Outfielder Luis Sumoza Named NY-Penn League Player of the Week
Sumoza hit .565 with 3 home runs and 10 RBI from Aug. 11-17
LOWELL, MA – The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox, announced today that Spinners outfielder Luis Sumoza was named New York Penn-League Player of the Week for the week beginning Monday, August 11.
Sumoza, Lowell’s clean-up
hitter, was 13-for-23 (.565) with four doubles and three home runs last week,
giving him a 1.130 slugging percentage with 10 RBI and eight runs scored, as the
Spinners completed a 6-1 week leading into the All-Star Break.
Sumoza had four multi-hit games, including three three-hit games for the week,
reaching base in eight consecutive plate appearances at one point.
Proving to be one of the streakiest hitters in all of minor league baseball, Sumoza was hitting as high as .304 at the end of July, following an 18-game hitting streak. Sumoza then fell into a nasty slump, recording just one hit in his next 26 at-bats, before his most recent eight-game hitting streak. Over this streak, Sumoza has recorded 15 hits, nine of them going for extra bases.
The last Spinner to be selected as Player of
the Week was outfielder Ryan Kalish for the week beginning July 16, 2007. Prior
to that, it was Spinners outfield Zach Daeges in July of 2006, preceded by
Lowell outfielder Bubba Bell was honored with the award the previous week and
first baseman Aaron Bates was honored during the first week of the month.
Sumoza currently leads the Spinners with nine home runs and 36 RBI. Sumoza is
the first Spinner in franchise history to record three five-RBI games and ranks
in the Top 10 in the league in home runs, RBI and doubles and his nine homeruns
are the most by a Spinners player since Carlos Rodriguez hit 12 in 1999.
