SPINNERS CHALLENGE EIGHT

NEW YORK TEAMS IN SUPER BOWL BET

LOWELL, MA – Lowell Spinners Vice President and General Manager Tim Bawmann couldn’t believe his luck when the Brooklyn Cyclones, a Mets affiliate, asked him to back the New England Patriots in a Super Bowl bet.

The bet would make the losing team’s general manager groundskeeper for a day at the winning general manager’s ballpark.

“We were so surprised that anybody would take a bet, let alone propose one, against what could be the best football team ever,” said Bawmann, “that we decided to extend the challenge to the rest of the New York teams in our league.

“Maybe we can save some money on our groundskeeping budget,” said Bawmann.

The Spinners and Cyclones play in the New York-Penn League, a league that features eight teams based in New York state: the Auburn Doubledays, Batavia Muckdogs, Brooklyn Cyclones, Hudson Valley Renegades, Jamestown Jammers, Oneonta Tigers, Staten Island Yankees and Tri-City ValleyCats.

The Spinners are the league’s only team based in Massachusetts.

Betting with each team individually could leave Bawmann with a busy summer. “I'm putting my entire summer schedule on the line!” he said.

So far, the Cyclones are the only New York team to accept the wager.

The Lowell Spinners have made national headlines over the last two years for the Yankees Elimination Promotion (Y.E.P.), in which the Spinners have donated close to $40,000 of Spinners uniforms and hats to local youth baseball teams that agree change their name from ‘Yankees’ to ‘Spinners’.

Last year, as part of Y.E.P., the Spinners obtained the actual first base from Game 6 of the 2004 American League Championship Series against the Yankees, the site of Alex Rodriguez’s famous slap play. Thanks to Electrical Wholesalers, the first base from the Rodriguez slap play was used throughout the season as the first base at every Spinners home game.
